In the headlights: Jerry Wigglesworth

* As seen in the December issue of Mercer's Reasonable Voice.

Recently, Keith Jones in LK2 received a call from our friends at St. Joseph Children's Home in Louisville, KY. They needed Mercer's help and Keith immediately jumped into action. With help from Bard Hamilton and our Van Division, Mercer devised a plan to help St. Joe's move a load of badly needled new bedroom furniture from Maryland to their facility in Kentucky.

Mercer van, Justin Allen (#10884), who drives for Jerry Wigglesworth, happened to be available and he was located less than 70 miles away.  When Mercer briefed Jerry about this movement, he offered his truck without hesitation - the only thing he wanted was for his driver to be modestly compensated.

Jerry felt the need to help the cause, as it plays a part in building a better community.  It is with this spirit that we were able to provide St. Joe's their load of furniture at no cost to them, allowing them to use their limited resources on more important things.

Thanks to Jerry and everyone involved with this movement and for making Mercer shine in the children's eyes! Mercer received the following letter from St. Joseph Children's Home Executive Director:

To the Mercer Transportation Family:

On behalf of the staff and Board, and most importantly the children in residential care at St. Joseph Children's Home, thank you for responding to our urgent need last week.  We were awestruck as you, within a few days notice, traveled to Maryland to pick up 9,600 pounds worth of much needed beds and dressers for our children.  Not  only did you graciously commit to helping us out, you were up and back within a day of finding out the details of our shipment.  This, after being told by the furniture company that we may not get our order of 6-8 weeks until it was built.

We are overwhelmed by your kindness and generosity.  You pulled together as a family to help us out, just like you do every Christmas when you sponsor many of the boys and girls in crisis. We are very grateful.

I welcome the opportunity to meet with you, to thank your team in person.  I will be in contact to arrange such a meeting in the near future.

With best regards,

Dr. Barry D. Walker
Executive Director
